Poetic Justice

Dutch Sheets is doyen of the intercessory prayer movement. He has posted a video encouraging Christians to persevere in prayer for the Lord to ‘overturn the 2020 election results’. He explains, ‘God needs Donald Trump to stay in office’ because … his heart is towards the things that God needs done….pro life, pro Israel, pro Constitution etc). I have often argued for theological clarification of the Name ‘God’. By definition, the name ‘God’ and the verb ‘need’ are incompatible.

Chuck Pierce is giving counsel for intercessors to keep their communication vertical not horizontal during this time of prayer … lest they lose heart. The assumption I suppose is that Jesus’ instruction to watch and pray does not include CNN or MSNBC (and Fox has been added to the list lately). So we now have ostrich intercession and the charismatic prayer movement has officially descended into witchcraft, or simply been manipulated and thoroughly deceived … or both? A needy god would indeed resort to the subversion of sovereign will… and several other moral depravities, but such a god does not deserve worship.

What seems already clear, though not to many still, is that the evangelical church in America has become utterly morally bankrupt, although like the president they project themselves rich. But is there error of judgment? That’s a question that will be asked and wrestled with for a long time so I am uninclined to say much now. Let everyone search their own heart. Perhaps God will grant us repentance in a season to come. He was as kind to Nebuchadnezzar, why not to his own people?

What I will say here is about the nature of judgment itself. Like poetry, the process of judgment employs rhythm, balance, rhyme, meter, symbolism, cadence and climax. Poetry like dreams are decoded by a process of deep reflection, and require one to rely more on congregative thinking (the big picture of the id) rather than the analytic logic of the ego. Judgment leaves clues, but the self centered ego glibly overlooks them.

Not only does judgment employ symbolism, as the followers of Jonathan Cahn have already been persuaded, but also rhythm. There is a mystic pulse of repetition to further persuade those who would look for truth and find it.

Meter, root of metric, is the process of measurement. Balance or lack of balance are further indicators of truth. For those who would seek truth, it often hides in plain sight, but like Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, there is a wisdom that unlocks divine truth that is hidden from those who claim wisdom on earth.

Isn’t it a mystery that Biden’s win exactly mirrors Trump’s over Hillary? And what is revealing are the comments from the Trump campaign and from Trump himself at the time that now have boomeranged like Lindsay Graham’s condemnation of Trump … before he won….or Franklin Graham’s condemnation at the Clinton impeachment, and silence during Trump’s.

There is a river of truth leading up to judgment’s finality. First the weighing, then the assessment, then the pronouncement then the execution.

Have the men of Isaachar now become Pharisees searching the scripture in vain? Is the scripture now fulfilled that warns Israel of their final judgment by (not of) Sodom and Gomorrah? Are they who were not a people now to be judges of the ‘people of God’?

In The Caribbean, what is called ‘ackee’ on one island refers to a completely different fruit on another. Perhaps this is where religious delusion begins. We say ‘church’ and assume heaven shares our definition. That’s why poetry is so useful. It uses the pure language of spirit – pictures, rather than the deceptive logic of serpentine words.

The task then is in translation, and so many of us get it wrong a thousand times over as that illusive process called biblical harmonization reflects. And religious deceit can often be quite nefarious … as Jay Sekulow might one day come to confess. For behold a child will lead them. As we see in our time, that adage is a double edged sword.
