I remember the first time I heard Kremlin propaganda cloaked in a ‘Thus saith the Lord’. This was before Trump was elected in 2016 and I recall musing at the time that the Russians had now hacked into the language of the Christian Right. The American evangelical community, not known to be gifted much in the spirit of discernment, (having equivocated several centuries over the biblicality of chattel slavery), and known to be the zealous and obedient type with itching ears just waiting to hear a ‘now’ word from God (the explanation of greatest convenience for the charismatic explosion i.e. the juxtaposition of dynamic growth and disjointedness), could hardly detect Putin’s brilliant impersonation of the Holy Spirit.

I’m clearly not surprised it continues even after the Biden inauguration. It was never only about installing Trump, but destroying America from within, with the appropriate WMD for the job (‘D’.for deception).

Let’s however not give the Russians too much credit. It would be egregious to cast the USA as victim of anything but its own crimes….or sins to strike the more resonant chord. Those who felt that they could finally exhale after Jan 20th should perhaps have saved their breath, or have you not heard what the sovereign lord hath said, who changeth times and seasons, “It is not over yet.” in spite of a growing chorus of earnest petition for Trump’s impeachment conviction and final assurance that the page has finally turned on a most ugly chapter in American history.

But perhaps the worst is yet to come. Certainly the thousands of US troops protecting the US Capitol, looking more these days like a besieged city during war time than the citadel of freedom. are seeking to brace for that. Maybe democracy wasn’t such a good idea to begin with, the seeds being sewn from the start of its two characteristic and antagonistic strains: the mobilization and manipulation of the people. (more about that in later posts).

This deceptive nostalgic impulse which America’s enemies have exploited, when seasons change to hark back to a golden past, longing for the fleshpots of Egypt (take that as commentary on the historical reliability of nationalist legend), signals a refusal to take responsibility in the present. This euphoric MAGA longing for Samson to stir himself as before, and for the Spirit to rain down as in former days however does not take into consideration recent haircuts, nor realistic assessments of present needs and future challenges.

What US needs ….. what we all need…. is a revolution that takes us boldly into untrod territory; but how does one get there with weak kneed leadership and a people huddled in prayer longing to go back ‘home’?
