‘It’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game’ makes absolutely no sense for one group of people. You probably know somebody in that group. The ‘my way or the highway’ folk whose moral compass is shaped rather like a traffic light with no amber; flat earth folk incapable of 360 degree perception.
There is nothing particularly damning in having an un- or underdeveloped sense of judgment. In fact, this is a necessary phase for being authentically human. However, when such sit in the position of leadership is a clear sign of impending destruction.
Even Shiloh himself was incapable of gathering the people of that city that thought itself wiser than God.
Hear his lament. “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, … how often WOULD I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings…”
“But YE WOULD NOT!” is more commentary than verdict indicating true divine judgment. Choice trumps prophecy, which in Judeo Christian theology was never about prediction, as if destiny is shaped by divine law rather than human choice.
Prophecy connects choice to consequence. It is the sojourner’s lamp. The wayfarer’s map. The spiritual vision that penetrates the veil, collapsing the boundaries of time.
But there is a time that prophecy is silent. The lamp is extinguished. The candle stick removed. What’s the use of words when there is no understanding?
