A Futile Conversation

A totally wrong-headed idea. What good can possibly be accomplished by bringing together in conversation such diametrically opposite ideologues and dogmatists as lesbian – loving Father Sean Major Campbell and militant anti-gay crusader Phillipa Davies in a conversation about the Church and Sexuality? Neither authoritarian church nor authoritarian state are capable of rationale thought on encountering their ideological nemesis. One will anathematize, the other will annihilate. The only vocabulary for conflict resolution – the murder of body or soul.

But for the evolution of the University, ( ironically, given its name, the only space secure enough for the study of diversities of thought and expression), mankind would be utterly doomed. All else is only interested in throwing the devil out, whatever form d’ evil should take: The niggaz, commies, faggots, atheists, feminists, the Muslim hordes … the full range of identity in opposition to whatever prevailing status quo is being threatened by invading barbarians seeking to usurp empire.

Such a conversation (The Church and sexuality) belongs in the Gender Studies department of the UWI. Nowhere else is one likely to encounter light to understand trends and patterns, let alone the creativity to manage them. Not to mention the human factor caught in the cross-hairs of change … in spite of their cunning people-serving facades, both church and state institutions have proven time and time again, they serve themselves. That is their ungarnished truth. The price of help is surrender.

We live in a time and space where the principles of democracy are suspected enemies of freedom. (Whose freedom exactly one is not supposed to say.) Once one has tasted of the powers of pulpit or parliament, the claim to represent the Voice of God or the Voice of the people, the humility to actually listen to lived reality long enough to identify viable paths of healing and growth beyond the terse boundaries of law or doctrine that represent the fading order is testily dismissed.

But this is Jamaica where the greatest public entertainment is Kas-Kas. And this affair promises to be a thriller. So save the date! Spread the word. Come prepared for a slaughter-fest.

  1. Why should a conversation on this topic of The Church and Sexuality be a “futile conversation” given that the Church is not a homogenous community, the subject of human sexuality is largely taboo in church circles and its broad scope with various nuances is not as widely understood as it should? Let the educational conversation begin.
