This one is personal. Forgive the divergent commentary. I offered the last video comment free so I’m owed the favor. I have followed Liberian affairs for decades. In many ways, it is the Haiti of Africa; grounds of some of the most depraved acts of human brutality and impaired conscience. I had watched the gruesome Doe execution video myself in days when such things could be displayed uncensored on youtube. I carry around in my phone today similar horrific pictures of human mutilation as reminder and motivation as I work towards a similiar hopeful outcome for Haiti’s communities torn apart by Cherizier’s debauched mercenaries.

My first speculation was that this was staged performance, although I was clear that even if it was, that would be simply the most marvellous development in Liberia’s war torn saga; and as there was no political expediency requiring such but a genuine concern for the nation’s future, I was completely OK with that, even if this was a clever display of everyone’s game face. First rate theatre, I thought.

I eventually became convinced however that an amazing and genuinely profound process of deep healing was taking place before my eyes that was starting with the families and would trickle down to the tribes in conflict. Later evidence would bear this out. Anyone familiar with Liberia’s tragic past would understand that this was a signal occasion for celebration of the triumph of human civilization over our more barbarous instincts. This signals hope for similiarly depraved regimes today (Russia, Israel, The US) that the true light of Christ brings redemption. Who was it who said though that if the light you have is darkness, how great is that darkness?
