Unity in Diversity

SuperstringIn my  article, What do you think about Jesus, I expressed serious doubt  that Science could replace Scripture as a source of inspiration. The notion that String Theory….even Super Unified String Theory might contribute to, clarify or even support Christian Theology however, is not an idea to be scoffed at without a hearing.

I made reference in that article to John Hagelin, (whose career in my opinion is an  object lesson in the wisdom of separating  expertise in science and spirituality in the present culture… the tendency to co-opt the language pool of a discipline in order to make direct appeal to those conditioned to uncritically accept its dogmas is too much of a temptation and both pure science and pure religion need to handle truth as a matter of principle not perception, unlike politics where truth is determined at the polls and sentiment oft sways reason).

When I first heard Hagelin more than a decade ago, I thought (correctly, it increasingly appears ) that he was then on the cutting edge of breakthrough in Consciousness Studies and Cosmology. The new Bio-centric Cosmology proposed by Lanza et al might still be snubbed at by centrists in the Academy, but as hinted at in Sheldrake’s work, if you have to resort to subterfuge to prop up your truths, you might as well discard them. The intellect of man is a consumer not producer of truth.

Although this might be heady stuff listening to for someone without a science degree  (like myself), but for anyone with an interest in Cosmology, whether from a Philosophical, Theological or Physical Science background, I highly recommend Hagelin’s presentations.

Jamaicans in general, with our Out of Many One ethos, and claiming Christians in particular (giving God a run for His money in answering Jesus’ John 17 prayer for Unity), need to develop a more nuanced and accurate understanding of the nature of Unity in order to set a more appropriate example of human relations informed by this understanding.

Maybe Science can teach us morality after all. “The Heavens declare the Glory of God and the firmament showeth forth His wisdom.”  Listen.
